Statement for Curated Open Portfolio
Walking is the lifeblood of my studio practice: I walk, I look, I see. While navigating a labyrinth of trails in Skopelos, Greece; sliding through muddy footpaths in County Mayo, Ireland; pacing the streets of Chicago; exploring residential neighborhoods in San Francisco’s Bay Area; climbing the sun scorched hills of Santa Cruz, CA; and hiking in New Mexico’s Sandia Mountains, I observe, imagine, and collect organic forms, hard-edged shapes, plotted boundaries, and patterns fundamental to the natural and human-made world. I think about how landscapes are organized: how plots, fields, land masses, and bodies of water might appear from above and fit together. I imagine a map and wander inside one, looking for what is native, imported, edible, or toxic, and making note of transitions such as gravel-to-rock, curb-to-road, and public-to-private. These shifts can be felt and heard underfoot; they can dictate one’s mood, movement, and attire. The resulting images are orderly and deliberate. Within them is a marked difference and conversation – or perhaps even a struggle - between that which is living, fabricated, uncontrollable, and in control.
